Snacks :)

Firstly i'd like to aplogize for being absent for the last month: I have been suffering from a B12 deficiency, which has ment i find it very difficult to get out of bed and be bothered to do anything!!

As it's the Christmas season, i have decided to blog about PARTY FOOD/ SNACKS/ NIBBLES/ CHIRSTMAS RECIPES. In a four part thing starting today and finishing up on Christmas eve!! For all you crimbo lovers like me, the one thing i adore is Christmas dinner and a Christmas buffet!!

SNACKS!!

1. Dorito's: At a party you need a good crisp something to crunch on!! Something that you can quickly snack on to give you that much needed salt as alcohol and deminished your salt levels!! Dorito's walkers i find to be such a good christmas essential. They are also great in making nacho's add some cheese, sour cream, home-made salsa and walaaaarr a lovely mexican dish to go before fajitas. (cannot spell btw). I tend to stick with either, Cool Original, Lightly Salted or Tangy Cheese. If your a serious heat devil then Chilli Heatwave is the one for you ;) But the others are bloody delicious!!

2. Pringles: A good christmas buffet, deserves some pringles. As the saying goes once you pop you can't stop ( once i open a packet, they are gone within an hour). They are nut free , i personally have onl;y tried the salt and vinegar variety but i'm sure some of the others are completley safe.

3. Dips: Got to have a dip to go along with these snacks!! Asda do a sour cream and chive dip which is free from nuts, they also do a garlic and onion dip!! (which i have yet to try) But the sour cream and chive dip is completley safe!!

That is all my snacks i eat during the festive period!! Oh and some kinnerton chocolate ;)

Frozen Goods :)

Personally i have found no issue in discovering frozen foods :) Most of the frozen foods that I eat are clearly labelled with allergie warnings, so that people can see what it is inside the product. For example "most" frozen varieties of meat and potatoe type things do no have nuts in them!! But vegetarian frozen foods , are often labelled with "may contain" due to them producing nut-cutlets, or nut-roasts (YUCK). haha !!

I'm so happy with the amount of feed back i have got from my blog, really makes me happy to know i am giving more food options to nut-allergy sufferers like us!! As it can be very limiting to your diet, well a normal "student" diet. Going out for meals is such a pain i have given up ever going out for a meal again! Cooking from fresh is the way that i usually cook, but there are the nights like when most of us just wanna chuck something in the oven !! These frozen foods, give you the option to do that!!

Birds Eye: Frankly they are pretty good at labelling there foods! My favourite has to be the Birds eye chicken burgers, they are so quick 20 minutes in the oven and they are done!! Also 4 for a £1.00 at the moment, so they are pretty good value. I either pair them with a salad (my diet) haha or I have them inside a home made roll, that my mum makes p.s (will totally put the recipe on here). They are also low in calories, which is not essential but for me its a good thing!!

They also do 4 cod cakes , they are really quick to cook 20 minutes like the chicken burgers and go well with chips or anything you are cooking. I pair it with, herby cous cous!! Which is just a recipe of cous cous, black pepper and asda mixed herbs. I also add in some roasted vegetables to it, for example: onions, mushrooms and peppers.

Asda Frozen Goods: I only recently discovered there curly fries!! YUMM! They are 1.50 for a whole bag and will last you for a while. The only allergy advice is Contains Gluten. Contains Wheat. So they are a bit spicey which is nice :)

Yorkshire puddings: Asda yorkshire puddings come in 16 for a pound and they are delicious with a rost. (Much easier than making your own btw) :) xx

My next post will be on Crisps and snacks and how to get the most out of that!! P.S there are other options in Asda, such as breaded mushrooms, onion rings!! But i haven't tried them yet and i'm really not into recomending things i haven't tried :) x I will let you know!!

Happy Eating!!

Random Student Diet :)

Alcohol

Was going to upload the ingredients of my pie but my camera won't work atm so will have to do it tomorrow :) But hope your all well!! But as people have asked me about alcohol and pizza's!! As a student they are the 2 main things in our diet haha! So i thought i would talk about the different types of alcohol as (they don't have ingredients on them) But i find most alcohols to be perfectly fine!!

Ones I have tried and they are completley fine:

Beer: Becks, Carlsberg, Stella, Budweiser, Carling & San miguel.

Wine: Rose, White, Red & Prosecco (Echoe Falls, Martini, Blossom Hill, Asda & Various other makes.

Shots: Raspberry Sourz, Apple Sourz, Blackcurrant Sourz, Raspberry Mickey Finns, Apple Mickey Finns, Cactus Jacks, Corkeys etc.

Cider: (I'm Allergic To Apples) But i know that Jacques, Strongbow and Bulmers are fine.

Spirits: Rum, Southern Comfort, Vodka (Smirnoff Asda Absolute)

One's to avoid would be Amaretto as that is Almond extract.

Pizza

Right so pizza is delicious, i do have a recipe to make your own from scratch which i do often , as tbf it is a lot nicer to eat than a pre-made one. Will post my recipe!! But it is essentially easier and cheaper to buy a pre-made one.

Asda: I buy the snack pizzas, they are £0.45 for a small pizza.
Iceland: They do thin and crispy pizza's that are a £1.00.
(do check the ingredients first)

Pizza Recipe

300g strong bread flour (available at asda)
1 tsp instant yeast (from a sachet or a tub)
1 tsp salt

Topping: Asda Passatta , Pepper, Salt!!
Add your own toppings i like garlic chicken and mushroom. (Cook the chicken with mushrooms in a  frying pan add 1 clove of garlic.)

Add to the top of your pizza and add cheese!! Bake in the oven for about 20 minutes :)

And WAAAALAAAA!!

Pizza Ala Hollie-Mae

Allergy free Cosmetics

There has been a lot of "nuts" been put into makeup recently an "obsession" with adding almonds to EVERYTHING. For example.. Vaseline, Lipsticks, Shampoo, Make-up wipes and many many more.. Firstly this is so annoying considering . I am a student, and 22 NOW WOOW! (Happy Birthday to me) I love wearing weird and wonderful makeup, this can limit my options somewhat!

For my birthday.. My loverly Sister, who tomorrow i am posting her NUT-FREE CHICKEN LEEK AND MUSHROOM PIE RECIPE. It is soooo good. She brought me some make-up, bless her she spent hours.. sifting through ingredients of lipsticks, blushers, eyeliners and other goodies.

She found, that unlike some make-up that generally doesn't include ingredients.. that SUPERDRUG collection 2000. Does a range of lipstick, that are completely suitable for me and (you of course) haha!! I have got a red one called Cherry Pop and a light pink one called Rose Tea :) They are lovely!!

It comes in a pink, lipstick case :)

She also found me.. their range of blushers from also collection 2000 that are BEAUTIFUL!!

Personally i find things easier to use if i know the ingredients as it doesn't worry me as i'm putting it on. (Even though i have to google some of the ingredients cos they are in latin) But i like the fact that they are safe and i can buy most of the colours :D xx

Thought i'd post a lovely picture of myself on my birthday night out with my new red lipstick from collection 2000.

Hope you enjoy trying the makeup my tip is always try a bit on your hand first, and you tell in 20 minutes if your going to have a reaction, e.g a rash, itching. BUT ALWAYS CHECK THE INGREDIENTS.

Tomorrow Chicken Pie Recipe Yum xx

Nut-Free Discovery's

First of all i want to apologize for not blogging for a Good month. But i have been busy with uni and sorting stuff out and trying lots of new FOODS :) yummmyy!! Because of a bad experience with my nut-allergy i generally avoided all foods that would be associated with nuts for example.. biscuits and other foods !! But lately i have been branching my efforts out! I was fruit-phobic due to a allergy to cherries so started eating oranges and raspberries. Enough of my rant haha!!

Personally i had been avoiding Sainsbury's due to eating one of their foods stating it was nut-free and discovered a peanut :| But i am now seeing that this rarely happens. I personally from sainsbury's have discovered the basics range which for me (a student) is so good as it's so cheap!! Their basics custard creams, are completely nut-free as I have tried and tested this method :D and to be fair they are so nice. I hadn't had a biscuit for about 15 years since last week. Their Pitta breads are completely nut-free !! 20p for 6 little pittas is a bargain. I also have found a cous-cous that is nut-free also from sainsbury's, they have a "extra special" range like Asda and it is completely safe :)

Asda:- They do mini pizza's which is awesome!! They are called snack pizza's in the fresh part and are small but they're good for a free dinner. Curly fries i have also checked out and they are nut-free, along with their tortilla wraps for fahitas obviously most of this stuff does have wheat and gluten in it!! But i have checked the free-from section and they offer Pitta's and other breads. But i do not think these are nut-free , as most of the gluten and wheat free foods do contain nuts.

Birds eye also do cod-cakes, they are roughly 80p for 4 and are completely safe as well :) I have been trying so many foods its ridiculous haha!!

All pictures are obviously copywrited to Asda, Sainsbury's and Birds eye.

Bon Apatite (not sure how to spell it)

The campaign!

Really wanna campaign for more nut-free items in supermarkets especially tesco's and would probably like to start a nut-free campaign to get supermarkets to produce a line of foods, in a nut-free area. I feel so strongly about this as a student , there is nothing i can microwave or just wack in the oven like my friends which is annoying.. I wanna make supermarkets not just stock, wheat, gluten and milk free options in the free-from section , but nut-free. I know supermarkets are probably scared of putting on the label nut-free but manufacturers do do it!!

Not being able to eat anything but fresh, and BTW i cannot find nut-free cous cous for the life of me anywhere.. I plan to get people on board and then send various letters to companies, especially TESCO!!!!!! they are so bad , i can't even drink there coke or eat there carrots, its carrots !!

So embark on this with me and like my post.. if any interest please don't hesitate to email me.. holliemaepike@gmail.com or alternativley message me on twitter: holliemaepike . Hope you agree and can help me in this campaign to get more nut-free stuff in the supermarkets!!

Please HELP.

Nut-free Staple Foods

So I decided today I would write a blog about the staple foods that I eat for example bread, etc and other things that I have found that really are brilliant!! and I Love.

1. BREAD

As you know bread can be hard to find, as they have seeded varieties, as I am also allergic to sesame seeds and other seeds. I have been eating this bread for about 15 years since my nut-allergy started. Hovis breads are very clear with their labeling and do other varieties of breads, such as rolls and pancakes. The pancakes are scrummy! Obviously for wheat and gluten allergy sufferers this bread is not suitable.. But their are plenty of wheat and gluten free breads in the free-from sections in most supermarkets. The bread I eat is the orange variety of Hovis, used to have beans on it! Ha which I miss. It's your simple white loaf, and it's not to fatty to eat. Here's a picture of the bread..
They are available at most leading chain stores, Morrisons, Tesco and Asda.

Allergy Advice
Contains Gluten. Contains Wheat. Contains Soya\Soybeans.

It does contain E471 and E472 as a child i was told to avoid such e-numbers but i have not had a problem eating this bread, as the labeling should state whether it includes any nut derivatives.

2. CAKES

Not really a staple but you gotta love a good cake, I generally make my own, in the future I will put up recipes on how to make my biscuits , raspberry ice cream and little cakes. Found the best cakes ever , which the manufacturers make in a nut-free zone, which is awesome when you haven't got time to whip up a batch of cupcakes. The company is the fabulous bakin' boys, they are completley nut free and have some delicious varieties, at the moment their Halloween cakes have just been launched so cake o'clock.

Here is a link to their policy on a nut-free zone, and nut-free food products.

And this is an image of the recent Halloween cakes that they have brought out.

Hope you enjoy eating them they are available at Asda or they can be ordered online.

3. CHOCOLATE

Chocolate is the hardest of all things to get with a nut-allergy as most chocolate manufacturers make nutty-chocolates boooooooooo! So most of the popular chocolate are off limits. But it is nice to know that there are people (chocolate manufacturers) that are looking out for us NUT-ALLERGY sufferers. Kinnerton make children's chocolate, On the front they have children's characters but they are awesome. They make chocolate bars, chocolate lollipops and also Easter eggs and advent calenders. Which for people who love Christmas and Easter is awesome as they stock them in most shops and can be brought for you by friends or family just look out for the Kinnerton logo, they have a special line created to avoid and nuts/peanuts getting in and devote themselves on nut-free chocolate. Kinnerton also supply chocolate for people with Gluten, Dairy, Nut and Egg allergies in their chocolate bar which is available from most supermarkets in the free-from section.

Here's a link to their information on their nut-free safety promise.

Here is the image of the nut free, dairy free, egg free and gluten free chocolate.
LUXURY DARK CHOCOLATE
And an image of their regular nut-free chocolate bars. Which at the moment are 17p each in Asda.

4. FROZEN GOODS.

Personally most frozen goods for example pizza's and curries have the label "may contain traces of nuts". But I have discovered BIRDS EYE! They are brilliant with labeling their food and i haven't branched much into their collection yet but I am just getting back into eating manufactured food again, as i used to eat only freshly made stuff, but being at university it's timely to make everything from scratch everyday! My favourite at the moment is BIRDS EYE: chicken burgers. They are brilliant for when over the summer it was Barbecue season, or recently I have been having them on a salad. Low calorie and also really tasty.

http://www.birdseye.co.uk/ - Link to their website for more information.

5. CRISPS.

I have found most crisp places to also manufacturer nuts, but as labeling is concerned most use different factories for their nuts. The best crisp manufacturer that i have found is Walkers, they have many different flavours most using sunflower oil to cook them and most do no have any nuts in them. Wotsits are a particular favourite of mine. Squares, Quavers, Doritos, Monster Munch, Plain crisps, Chipsticks and others are available to eat and all nut-free.

6. SOUPS

Okay so most soups do contain sweetcorn as I discussed yesterday in my blog, but some are nut-free and sweetcorn free. I tend to stick with Heinz, their cream of tomatoe and cream of chicken soups are absolutley find for nut-allergy sufferers to eat and they are scrummy!

Ingredients

Water , Chicken (4%) , Modified Cornflour , Vegetable Oil , Cream , Wheat Flour , Dried Skimmed Milk , Flavourings , Milk Proteins , Yeast Extracts , Herb Extracts , Stabiliser - Polyphosphates and Sodium Phosphates , Salt , Garlic Salt , Spice Extract , Colour - Beta-Carotene .
Allergy Advice
Contains Gluten. Contains Wheat. Contains Milk.

Hope you enjoyed my rundown of my staples in my diet and how you can have a healthy balanced diet , not including nuts. This took me so long to do , that I am gonna split the staples into 2 sections so i can do another one next week sometime! Look forward to your feedback and hopefully this will help recent nut-allergy sufferers to eat everything that they want.

Happy Eating

Little PASTA!!

So today on my usual walk around the supermarket I try and see if there is any new things I can eat without the dreaded "May Contain Traces Of Nuts." Being myself a severe nut-allergy sufferer. It's difficult to find lots of the stuff i want to eat!

Today i found the most amazing thing.. usually i look at all the soups and stuff, Heinz being a particular favourite of mine but as a nut-allergy sufferer, i am also allergic to sweetcorn. It is a pain finding chicken noodle soup without it in.!! Today i found little tiny star pasta you can add to soups!!! It's called STELLINE and frankly i'm so excited to make a chicken noodle/pasta soup tomorrow or a vegetable soup with pasta in it. It cost me a £1.00 but i have never been so excited to find tiny pasta!! and also nut-free :D

Here is a picture of the badboy..

They are a new range by asda, and they also do.. orzo which a rice type shape pasta and another type cannot remember the name that is like little circles :) (Ditali just found it)
They are £1.00 per pack in Asda..
Link below..

Tomorrow I will update with the recipe and step-by-step pics of how to make my chicken noodle soup, nut-free, sweetcorn free and hollie friendly :D

Hope you enjoy and can get some yourself :)
